Are We There Yet?
Here at ABC Head Start it is our last full week of classes for the children, next week is the last week for staff. As we wind down and say our goodbye's the question we find ourselves asking each other is, "Are you doing anything exciting for the summer?" Ahhh summer vacation! And the employees at ABC Head Start are lucky enough to have July and August OFF! And of course all you parents know this means your children will be home ALL SUMMER LONG too.
As a child I remember how exciting it was to burst through the doors on the last day of school and let the summer begin! We were not a family who went on winter vacations to tropical places. I'm thinking mostly because my parents can't swim and my dad resembles a lobster after about 2.2 seconds in the sun. Also, my dad's wardrobe consists of jeans and cowboy boots so I'm not sure how that would fair on the beaches of Mexico. So we opted for summer family vacations that usually didn't involve too much water and where jeans and cowboys boots were suitable attire.
We usually went places with our holiday trailer. Five family members in an extended cab Ford truck pulling our 70's style holiday trailer. But then we upgraded to a fifth wheel and were livin' the dream! One summer vacation took us to North and South Dakota to hit up Mount Rushmore and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Once we drove to Osoyoos, British Columbia to take my brother and cousin to 'curling camp' (as in the sport of curling.) Those were the GRAND TREKS for our family but most summer vacations were spent right here in Edmonton!
That's right! The good ol' City of Champs was our favourite summer vacation destination. I have so many great childhood memories of Klondike Days, The Fringe Festival, Trapper's games, school shopping at West Edmonton Mall and the list goes on and on. We would park our trailer at Glowing Embers Campground, west of the city, and spend our days exploring Edmonton and all the wonderful summer activities this city has to offer. There is a reason Edmonton is referred to as Festival City, it has so many great, and generally affordable, events!
I am mostly staying in Edmonton for the summer and really don't have a whole lot planned. But now when colleagues ask me "Are you doing anything exciting for the summer?" My reply will be "YES I'm reliving my childhood!"
