Opening Doors for Children & Families

Back In The ABC Head Start Groove

Today is my first day back at work since December 23, 2011 - that's right my first day back since LAST YEAR! It is the first day back for all staff as this is the schedule we work on (I can hear the collective groans.) We have a two week break in the winter, a week in the spring, and two months (or for our Leadership team 6 weeks) in the summer. I'm not going to lie it's pretty awesome! It adds to the beauty of the job I already love.

This was a great winter break. Because of Christmas being on a Sunday, we worked right up until December 23 which meant BOOM the next day was Christmas Eve. Once the hub bub of Christmas and New Years were over I had a glorious 9 days to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I don't even know if I thought about things, I actually deliberately chose activities in which I did not have to think. I feel rested and completely ready to be back at work.

Well almost... You see when I have a break from work, returning isn't the hard part - it's sleeping the night before the first day back that is difficult for me. I toss and turn all night. I think it's partly because I haven't been on a schedule and I'm worried I will sleep in. I got a new "alarm clock" for Christmas. This is the most technologically advanced alarm clock I have ever seen. It is a docking station for my Apple products, it has bluetooth capabilities, it might even put my makeup on for me (I haven't read the entire manual.) When I went to set the time on the thing I pressed "time" and the correct time appeared! Maybe this is not news for anyone else but to me it was MAGIC! IT KNEW WHAT TIME IT WAS! However with all of these bells and whistles I did not trust it to wake me at 6:30am. So I tossed, and turned, and looked at the clock every hour to make sure I hadn't slept in. In hind sight I should have just set my $5.99-drug-store-special alarm clock which I have been operating for the past 10 years for back up.

So with that, I welcome back all of the staff, volunteers, children and families to ABC Head Start. I hope you enjoyed your break as much as I did. I hope you got time to relax, energize, rejuvenate or whatever YOU needed to make the rest of this school year as successful as the first part. A very happy 2012 as we embark on new adventures, new discoveries and a new year.

As an aside I also had a dentist appointment today (please see "A Trip To The Dentist".) It was a regular cleaning but I was still nervous. Our administrative assistant can vouch for me that I was a wreck and did everything to try to procrastinate including drawing little stick figures of me being nervous on our white board until she said in her most authoritative voice "CHRISTI GET GOING!" Well this morning I also asked my Mom to pray for no cavities as she has a direct line to God, and it was either that or my rigorous tooth cleaning schedule that I can proudly report no cavities! YAY! 2012 is going to be a great year. ;)

At ABC Head Start we believe the best way to help children is to strengthen families and community. As we work together in partnership we benefit from the shared enthusiasm, energy and ideas that each partner contributes. Community support ensures the continued success and sustainability of ABC Head Start. Every year volunteers donate thousands of hours of time in classroom and non-classroom activities.
