Opening Doors for Children & Families

Give A Backpack

We have had a very busy couple of months at ABC Head Start. Our first annual Tapestry fundraiser was a HUGE success, and we can’t wait to do it all again next year.

I am not sure how it happened, but somehow the school year flew by and it is already mid-June! Activities at ABC Head Start sites are starting to wrap up as we approach summer holidays. One of my favourite days at ABC Head Start is Literacy Backpack Day. It is the day we celebrate the accomplishments of all of the ABC Head Start children and families and wish them well in their educational journey.

At ABC Head Start we know that by giving children the best possible early learning opportunities in life, we ensure the future well-being and prosperity of our families and communities. That’s why on June 20, we will hand out nearly 500 backpacks full of the tools they need to be successful in their educational journey. Watching the faces of the children as they receive their backpacks is priceless, as they light up with excitement and joy. The backpacks are filled with books, crayons, pencils, a “reading buddy” (stuffed teddy), a glue stick, and many more tools to support their learning – and are really HEAVY! But the children are always so proud to receive them that they insist on carrying them on their backs – even if it nearly tips them over.

This year we are reaching out to our community to provide backpacks full of all these goodies for the children and families of ABC Head Start. EPCOR has generously offered dozens of volunteers to assembly and distribute the backpacks (there is literally a flurry of EPCOR employees in our office as I type picking up supplies.) Through various fundraisers and donations we are nearly halfway to our goal of 500 backpacks. Revolution Cycle hosted a BBQ and gave the proceeds to ABC Head Start, the employees of WCB had a used book sale with the proceeds going to Literacy Backpack Day and DXI Solutions generously donated to the cause. Not to mention countless individual donations.

donation of $40 buys a backpack filled with all of the tools for one child.

Consider buying a backpack for a child today, or maybe even a part of a backpack, or like some of our generous donors – backpacks for a whole class of 18 children with a donation of $720. No donation is too big or too small, every dollar counts! Help us reach our goal and you get a charitable tax receipt. You can track our progress on our website. We have until the end of our fiscal year in August to reach our goal.

If you have any questions regarding Literacy Backpack Day or how you can support ABC Head Start please contact Christi Lein, development@abcheadstart.org.

With the support of volunteers, ABC Head Start Society is able to support vulnerable children and families throughout the year. Volunteers contribute by sharing their ideas, talents and energy to events, on our Board of Directors and fundraisers, and in providing direct support to children, parents/caregivers and families.
