Recently I received this email from a colleague regarding an upcoming presentation we are making to staff: Colleague - "...I need to review and think through my presentation notes – and you and I will need to decide who is doing what. How do you want to figure that out?" Me - "I thought I would mostly be your hype girl…like stand beside you and cheer you on…but I could probably do more than that."
Now if you are unfamiliar with the term hype girl click here for a quick tutorial. My sister lovingly refers to me as her hype girl. I like the term because I enjoy being people's cheerleaders. Again, this may be some repressed adolescent wish to be a cheerleader but this isn't a therapy session right? Also I think the role of a hype girl is to make sure everyone is having fun and enjoying themselves. Meaning the hype girl has to be having THE MOST fun because let's face it FUN is contagious.
I like to be the hype girl at ABC Head Start. A colleague even suggested I have pom pom's made in ABC Head Start colours! Are you kidding me?? That would be a dream come true!!! But I think it's important to bring some joy to the teams you supervise or to the colleagues you work with - because let's face it it makes work much more enjoyable doesn't it? Plus it's not hard to be the one having the most fun when you're actually having fun! Yes, I know I've said it plenty, I love my job.
All school year long, the staff at ABC Head Start have been the hype girls for the families we serve. They have cheered them on and supported them in whatever areas the families identified. Now that our school year is coming to an end, most of the children at ABC Head Start will be transitioning into a Kindergarten setting. So we pass on the education hype girl (and guy) torch to the parents. In order for children to be successful in their school careers the parents have to be their biggest supporters. They have to be there to cheer them on and celebrate even the littlest of successes! Because let's face it, these next 13 years will not always be easy - but it will be worth it.
So if you are not already someone's hype girl, or guy, give it a shot! It doesn't take much time or money, and it may just be the greatest gift you can give your children.
