Opening Doors for Children & Families

If Nothing Changed We Wouldn't Have Spring

I was visiting one of our classrooms yesterday, sitting at the snack table with the children when a little girl who is learning english said to me in a very thick accent, "Miss Christi, it is spring."

"Yes it is spring!" I replied, "I LOVE spring!"

"What do you like about spring?" One of the teachers asked (modeling appropriate question asking).

"I like that it is getting warmer outside and I love seeing all the baby animals that are born in the spring." As mentioned before I live outside of the city and every morning I get to drive in and look at all the baby's clinging to their mother's side as they navigate their new world. A friend of mine lives on a farm near Tofield. She has baby goats on her farm. If you have never seen a baby goat in person you should drive out to my friend's farm, they are perhaps the cutest thing you will ever see...and hold...and cuddle. I think I might take one home.

Spring time at ABC Head Start means the beginning of the next school year. March 1 (or March 5 this year) is when our phone lines opened up to applications for the 2012 - 2013 school year. Social Workers receive the applications and get to meet each family. They go out to the family's home and spend time getting to know the children, parents and siblings and tell them all about ABC Head Start. I love getting to hear the stories from the Social Workers of all the delightful relationships they are forming and how gracious, grateful and welcoming the family members are in having them come into their homes.

The relationships start now and grow until September. We hope that this puts the families at ease when they come in the fall. They are familiar with the staff, they have shared their values and we have shared ours. ABC Head Start is not just for children it is for the WHOLE family.

If you are a family living on limited income and would like to apply for ABC Head Start call 780-461-5353 or access the online application.

With the support of volunteers, ABC Head Start Society is able to support vulnerable children and families throughout the year. Volunteers contribute by sharing their ideas, talents and energy to events, on our Board of Directors and fundraisers, and in providing direct support to children, parents/caregivers and families.
