Why we do the work

ABC Head Start is a registered charity started in 1985 because children from low-income households often start school behind their peers. The Head Start model was chosen because its powerful combination of services reduces poverty in communities by improving educational outcomes for children and strengthening families.

Over 37 years, we have grown to also serve neurodivergent children with affirming strategies for a range of diagnoses. Research has shown many children who need extra support are turned away from regular early childhood programs due to behaviour concerns. ABC is often a family’s last resort to get the help they need.

We know children are most successful when their family and community is healthy, connected, and engaged in their learning. ABC gives children and families who face challenges a head start to develop skills for a successful life.

What we do

ABC Head Start inspires bright futures for preschool children and their families. Our wrap around services include:

• classroom instruction

• family support

• community development

Our early-learning approach is child-led and follows the evidence-based belief that children learn through play.

Children at ABC are supported by Teachers, Education Assistants, and a whole team of clinicians specializing in speech-language pathology, behaviour, and occupational therapy. We employ proven strategies like Alberta’s Flight Curriculum Framework, the SCERTS model, and Safe Management to create a positive learning environment for every child.

Parents and caregivers at ABC are supported by registered social workers who help them achieve their goals, work through crises, and meet their basic needs. Family Connection Groups bring caregivers together for group learning and peer support while each parent has the opportunity for individualized guidance and help navigating community services.
